The Indian Ocean runs along the southeast border. Diani Beach is situated 30 km south of Mombasa (Mombasa is located on Mombasa island), Kenya's principal port and the country's second largest city. The beach is the area's major attraction: palm-fringed, long, soft, white and lovely. Diani Beach is a well-developed tourist area. There are three main shopping centres in Diani Beach and a number of boutiques, greengrocers, supermarkets, drugstores, bakeries, souvenir shops, discotheques as well as a modern surgery, pharmacy, mail office, petrol station and a car rental agency. The beautiful hotels, some under German direction are situated near the Indian Ocean. They offer a large variety of sport and recreational activities. Diani Beach has a growing assortment of hotels and restaurants - some of them luxurious. The offshore coral reef can be swum to or can be reached by boat in ten minutes. The reef is part of the Diani-Chale-Marine-Park (nature reserve). Ukunda has an airstrip for smaller airplanes starting and end point for airborne safaris to the game reserves. The Shimba Hills national park is located 30 km inland from Diani Beach. Being on the top of the ridge (400 m high) one has a wonderful view of the Indian Ocean, the Usambara mountains in Tanzania and the wide grassland populated by elephant, buffalo, bushbuck and sable antelope. |
